A utility company worker reported that the animal was aggressive towards him but he was protected by a fence.  As officers attempted to make contact with the owner the animal came around to the front of the house and charged the officer who was standing in the front yard. The officer shot the Rottweiler with his service weapon.

The owner then exited the residence and retrieved the animal. The animal was transported to the Lake Animal Hospital for treatment.

The victim told authorities on Tuesday morning that her ex-boyfriend, 26-year-old Shawn Steemke of Aurelia, had entered her residence without permission. Police broadcast to area law enforcement to be on the look out for Steemke and a short time later he was apprehended by the Aurelia Police Department.

Steemke was taken to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for evaluation and was subsequently transferred to another facility for continued evaluation.
