K-9 Monument

Estherville, IA (KICD) --A fallen K-9 Officer is being honored.

A monument was erected by the Estherville Police Department for the K-9 Officer Max. Matt Reineke worked with the K-9 unit, talked of his former comapanion on the force...

Reineke says it was an honor to get to get to work with Max, who became a close friend...

The monument was put into it's place Today (Thursday) in the Emmet County Law Enforcement Center North of the main entrance. It was purchased through a memorial donation from Henry-Olson Funeral Homes.

Max was initially purchased through generous donations by area citizens and businesses. In his three-plus years on the street, Max and K-9 Handler, Matt Reineke, assisted in the confiscation of $59,000 worth of illegal drugs, two vehicles involved in illegal drug activity and $3,500 in cash from suspected drug dealers.

Max also assisted in looking for missing persons and the apprehension of fleeing suspects. The team worked with many agencies and the Iowa Great Lakes Drug Task Force.

Max died on October 5th 2011, following a short illness caused by a disease known as Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia.

Since then, Reineke says the police department purchased another dog and that he gets to work with him...
