Debt Figures Response



Undated, IA (KICD)--A recent report published in Saturday's Des Moines Register pegged Iowa's debt at $14.4 billion.

Something that may have caught they eye of many in our listening area was the cities of Arnolds Park and Okoboji checking in at number 3 and 4 for highest per capita debt at $10,862 and $9,055 respectively.

Arnolds Park City Administrator Ron Walker tells KICD News that these figures are a bit skewed to the common eye.

The total debt in Arnolds Park stands at over $12.23 million and over $7.3 million in Okoboji. An EPA mandated water treatment plant that both cities are chipping in on the project. Okoboji City Administrator Dennis Daly tells KICD News they owe around $5 million for this project.

Arnolds Park owes around $5.7 million on the water treatment plant.
 
Daly adds that their City Council has been frugal in their spending.

The city of Spencer's debt checks in at over $15.8 million and just over $1,400 per capita.
