NCGA President Pam Johnson says the ethanol industry has had a positive impact on local communities where plants are located. She knows because there are six ethanol plants within fifty miles of her Floyd, Iowa farm.
Last week the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the National Pork Producers Council both submitted comments urging the EPA to grant a waiver.
Johnson acknowledges that this year’s drought has adversely impacted livestock producers because of high corn prices, but she notes that the drought is likely to be a short-term event, while the benefits of having built the ethanol industry are not.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ended the comment period on the RFS waiver request last Thursday. EPA is expected to announce its decision on the request next month.
